How to add email and telephone links in WordPress

A question we get asked quite often is how to create a link to an email address. There’s a small trick to it, but once you know it, it’s quite easy to do. As a bonus, we’ll also talk about how to create a link to a phone number.

Creating a link to either an email address or a phone number is very much like creating a normal link. Start by highlighting the text in the editor that you wish to make click-able (Figure 1). Then, click on the “Insert/edit link” icon in the toolbar (Figure 2); this will open a small dialog window with the “URL” field pre-populated with “http://” (Figure 3).

The “http:” in a normal URL is called the “scheme” or “protocol” – it tells your browser what type of resource the URL contains so the browser can treat it appropriately.

To link to an email address, we need to use a different scheme: mailto. In the “URL” field, enter “mailto:” followed by the email address. For example: mailto:support@gowp.com (Figure 4).

To link to a phone number, we can use yet another scheme: tel. In the “URL” field, enter “tel:” followed by the phone number. For example: tel:9123037588 (Figure 5).
