How to disable the expanding editor in WordPress 4.0

WordPress 4.0 introduced an improved writing experience with an editor window that expands as content is added. The formatting tools and meta boxes are pinned in place as the window grows and the redundant scroll bars have been removed. It’s pretty slick and I’m a fan.

BUT, what if you want a static editor window with the option to manually resize it, as in previous versions of WordPress? Maybe you’re using a calendar plugin and it’s frustrating to scroll through paragraphs of description text in order to edit the meta fields below. Or maybe you’re just used to the old way and don’t like change.

Good news: You can easily disable this feature.

Just click “Screen Options” in the top right of the screen and then uncheck “Expand the editor to match the window height.” Watch me do it:
