Switch between WordPress accounts with the User Switching plugin

Have you ever needed to switch back and forth between WordPress user accounts repeatedly? We recently ran into this with one of our enterprise customers. They have a large site with over 700 pages that are broken into dozens of departments. Using a permissions plugin, users are given access to edit certain pages and restricted from others. We found ourselves needing to log in as different users over and over again to make sure they had access to the correct pages.

Fortunately, the User Switching plugin makes life a lot easier.

The plugin adds a “Switch To” link next to each user account in the admin panel and on the User’s Edit Profile page:

When you click the link, you’re immediately logged out of the current account and logged in as the selected user. You can return to the previous account by selecting “Switch back to” link in the top right of the admin bar:

A feature that I overlooked at first but is incredibly useful is the ability to “switch off” or log out of an account temporarily and then log back in with one click. I find myself needing to log out often in order to see my sites as visitors do and this plugin makes it much more efficient:

The plugin’s author is John Blackbourn, a long-time WordPress developer and the release lead for WP 4.1. The plugin is secure and is compatible with WordPress, Multisite, BuddyPress and bbPress.
